Crystal River, Florida - During the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 17, Citrus County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a home in Crystal River after the occupants claimed they'd been attacked by a man armed with a knife. The suspect, 26 year-old Brett Carver of Crystal River, was later located by deputies at a local hospital where he was seeking treatment for wounds he had received from his own weapon during the attack.
Detectives Casalvieri and Bang with the Major Crimes Unit responded to the hospital and began an investigation. They learned that Carver had been living in the residence where the altercation occurred with the victim and witness. Carver was said to have entered the residence, confronting the other residents and making threats then attacking one of the residents, cutting the victim once with a razor knife.
The witness attempted to intervene, which resulted in a physical confrontation with Carver, during which the witness, armed with a grill fork, chased Carver out of the residence. Carver fled the home, leaving behind the knife and other pieces of physical evidence that corroborated the statements made by the victim and witness.
Due to Mr. Carver and the victim sharing a residence, Carver was placed under arrest at the hospital, charged with aggravated domestic battery. He is being held at the Citrus County Detention Facility without bond.
"Carver made the choice to use violence in an attempt to resolve his disputes," said Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast. "This incident could have easily had a tragic ending. The quick arrest made by deputies has helped ensure the victim and the community's safety. The Citrus County Sheriff's Office remains steadfast in our commitment to protecting and seeking justice for victims."
