Lecanto, Florida - The driver of a garbage truck, a 59 year-old Lecanto man, was seriously injuried in a three-vehicle traffic crash that occurred on Monday morning, Jan. 4, at 8:04 am. The crash occurred on State Road 44 (W. Gulf to Lake Hwy.) east of N. Van Nortwick Rd. in Lecanto, Florida.

According to a press release by the Florida Highway Patrol, a sedan driven by an 83 year-old Homosassa man was traveling east on SR 44, while  the garbage truck was traveling west on SR 44, with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) traveling behind it that was driven by a 33 year-old Lecanto woman who carried a 7 year-old Lecanto girl as her passenger.

The press release stated, that due to the glare, the 83 year-old man driving the sedan was unable to see the roadway and traveled across the left turn lane into the westbound lanes of SR 44 and collided, nearly head-on, with the garbage truck. The collision caused the garbage truck to overturn, and it was then struck by the SUV. All three vehicles came to final rest within the roadway of SR 44.

The only person injured in the crash was the 59 year-old driver of the garbage truck, who was also the only passenger involved in the crash that was not wearing a seatbelt, the release stated.

Citing Marsy's Law (Florida's victim protection law) as the reason, the FHP no longer identifies the people or specific models of vehicles involved in traffic crashes in its press releases.
