Citrus County, Florida - A 28 year-old Inverness man riding a bicycle was seriously injured when he drove his bicycle into the side of a sports utility vehicle ("SUV"), about 9:45 pm on Sunday, Dec. 20, in the Inverness Highlands area of Inverness, FL
According to the Florida Highway Patrol ("FHP"), a 32 year-old man from Inverness was driving an SUV, traveling south on S. Apopka Ave., approaching the intersection with E. Harvard St., while the bicyclist was traveling west on E. Harvard St., approaching the intersection with S. Apopka Ave. The bicyclist failed to stop at the stop sign and collided into the driver's side of the SUV as the SUV passed through the intersection.
After the impact, the SUV came to a controlled stop on the west shoulder of the roadway, and the bicycle came to rest in the northbound lane, slightly south of the intersection.
The driver of the SUV carried a passenger, a 31 year-old woman from Inverness. Each was wearing a seatbelt, and neither was injured during the crash.
In its press releases, the FHP no longer identifies the people or the specific models of vehicles involved in traffic crashes, citing Marsy's Law as the reason.
