Lane construction was recently completed for Citrus County's resurfacing project on Citrus Springs Blvd. - 1.4 miles from US 41 to the Withlacoochee Trail (CR 39). The project was jointly funded by Citrus County, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Small County Outreach Program (SCOP). The bid amount for the project was $970,546, and the project was completed on time and within the allocated budget.
Citrus County decided it was time for a 'lane diet,' due to the lanes on Citrus Springs Blvd. being 18 feet wide, which is too narrow for 2 lanes, and too wide for 1 lane. The project moved-in the lane stripes to create a standard 11-foot wide vehicle lane, which provided space for a 7-foot wide bike/pedestrian lane.
The new bike/pedestrian lane provides an extension to the existing bike/pedestrian facilities on Citrus Springs Blvd. west of US 41.
Bay News 9 TV was on location in Citrus Springs, October 29 (see photo on left), to film local cyclists and learn the benefits of the new bicycle/pedestrian lane on Citrus Springs Blvd.
“My friends and I ride this road regularly, to get from the north trailhead on the Withlacoochee State Trail, to the Dunnellon Trail. This new bike lane allows riders to avoid the dangerous part of US 41,” said cyclist Bob Feldberg. “We were delighted at the wonderful paving job the county has done, and the nice wide bike lane makes it a pleasure to ride.”
Citrus County previously implemented 'lane diets' to create bike/ pedestrian lanes in other areas of the county, on Roosevelt Blvd. and Beverly Hills Blvd. in Beverly Hills, FL.
