Alcohol suspected as factor in the crash
A 31 year-old Homosassa man, who was a passenger in one of two vehicles involved in a traffic crash in Homosassa, on Satarday afternoon July 11, died later at an area hospital of injuries sustained in the crash.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 4:15 pm on S. Suncoast Blvd. (US 19) at Suffolk Terrace, in the area of the Citgo gas station and Pack-N-Post shipping.
A 63 year-old Homosassa man was driving a sedan, traveling south on S. Suncoast Blvd., in the left turn lane, approaching the intersection of Suffolk Terrace, at the same time that a 29 year-old Homosassa woman was driving a sports utility vehicle (SUV), traveling north on S. Suncoast Blvd., in the outside lane, also approaching the intersection of Suffolk Terrace.
The press release stated, at the intersection, the sedan turned left into the path of the SUV, and the sedan collided with the SUV. After impact, the sedan came to a controlled stop, and the SUV rotated and overturned several times, ejecting the two adult occupants - the driver and the 31 year-old man. Both were transported to an area hospital, the driver with serious injuries, and the man with critical injuries; however, he later died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. A third passenger in the SUV was a three year-old boy in a seatbelt restraint who received minor injuries in the crash.
According to the FHP press release, impairment is suspected of the 63 year-old sedan driver who received minor injuries during the crash, and charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Citing Macy's Law as the reason, the FHP no longer lists the names of people or the specific models of the vehicles involved in traffic crashes.
