Citrus County, Florida - On Wednesday, October 21, 2020, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) was made aware of emails sent to Citrus County voters, that were allegedly sent from a group known as "Proud Boys," that made threatening statements to recipients.
The CCSO is working with the Citrus County Supervisor of Elections Office to document the cases and forward all reports to the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
These emails are not isolated to Citrus County and are being reported in pockets across the state. Nationally, the Proud Boys has denied involvement.
The email - which displays the recipient's name and address - threatens the voter to vote for a specific candidate or the group "will come after you."
The CCSO advises citizens to never provide personal information or financial records to emails, to not respond to the email and to notify local law enforcement should you receive one of these emails
If you have received one of these emails, please contact the CCSO Major Crimes Unit at 352-249-2790 to report the incident.
