Lecanto, Florida – At approximately 2:47 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR) was dispatched to a location on S. Leona Avenue in Lecanto due to reports of a fire.

The Ladder 23 crew from the fire station located on S. Kensington Ave. in Lecanto was the first suppression unit to arrive on scene at 2:55 a.m., to find an approximately 1,800 square-foot detached concrete block garage fully involved in flames.

Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines on the fire by 2:57 a.m. The Lecanto unit took a defensive fire attack, while the Squad 7 crew from the Connell Heights fire station in Crystal River established a water supply and coordinated shuttle operations. The fire was knocked down by 3:02 a.m., and crews from fire stations 3 (Homosassa), 5 (Hernando), 7 (Connell Heights), 8 (Highlands), 20 (Pine Ridge), and 23 (Kensington) rotated through mop-up and overhaul operations to ensure complete extinguishment of the fire. Tanker units supplied water from a nearby hydrant. The power to the structure was isolated.  All CCFR units were cleared from the scene by 4:39 a.m.

The detached garage and its contents were determined a total loss.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was determined to be an electrical fire, originating near a power cord supplying electricity to the structure’s electric fencing.

CCFR Safety Message:
Improper or makeshift electrical connections can quickly overheat and cause devastating fires. Always have electrical work performed by a licensed professional, and ensure that outdoor or detached structures use properly rated wiring and circuits.

Citrus County Fire Rescue commends the quick response and teamwork of all crews who contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby property.
