Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR)
Hernando, Florida – At 3:45 p.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue was dispatched to North Dawson Drive in Hernando due to a reported fire.
The first unit arrived on scene at 3:52 p.m. to find an approximately 8 by 10 foot enclosed shelter fully engulfed in flames.
Engine 5 from the Hernando fire station deployed a hose line and had water on the fire by 3:54 p.m. The fire was declared to be under control at 3:55 p.m. The fire was fully extinguished, and crews completed mop-up operations before clearing the scene at 4:36 p.m.
The shed was determined to be a total loss.
According to fire rescue, the shelter appeared to have been used as an unauthorized residence. Witnesses reported that the individual staying inside the shed had walked away from the location, shortly after the fire began.
There were no injuries.
Firefighters found that the property’s power source was disconnected at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined. The case has been referred to the Citrus County Fire Marshal’s Office and Citrus County Code Enforcement for follow-up, due to the unsafe conditions and debris found on the property.

Always use approved and properly wired structures for living spaces. Improvised shelters, extension cords, and unsafe electrical setups create serious fire hazards.
