Your Voice Matters!

Funding for SHINE and Healthy Aging programs is in jeopardy.  As the US Congress continues 2026 budget talks, they are considering eliminating all funding for these critical programs.

  • SHINE provides free, unbiased, and confidential counseling assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers. Our team of dedicated volunteers and staff helped beneficiaries choose plans, save money on prescriptions, identify fraud, and even submit appeals.

  • Healthy Aging programs provide communities with evidence-based wellness classes designed to empower older adults to manage their health. Classes are taught by staff and community partners, like senior centers and health departments in small group settings.

You can tell your elected officials how you feel about ending senior programs! There are two quick and easy ways you can do this:

Call or email our Senators and Representatives

Senator Rick Scott - (202) 224-5274

Flip the Script on Aging

On Wednesday, Elder Options and ElderCare of Alachua County hosted "Flip the Script on Aging" a panel discussion featurig older adults who defy stereotypes. Our panel featured individuals familiar to many in Gainesville:

Gary Nelson, an Emmy and Edward R. Murrow award-winning broadcast journalist, and anchor on CBS Miami, and correspondent with MainStreet Daily News;

Verna Johsnon, a retired educator and co-founder of Gainesville's Caring and Sharing Learning School with her husband, Dr, Simon Johnson, over 25 years ago;

Pat Bellis, a Tai Chi Instructor focused on helping others breathe and move, as well as an Alliance of Therapy Dogs of Alachua tester and observer.

Ronnie Lovler, a journalist with over 40 years of experience, including significant time working for CNN and CBS in Latin America, and currently a correspondent with MainStreet Daily News.

Each shared their wisdom, laughs, and reflections on what "Aging" means -- and DOESN'T mean. We look forward to sharing more of their insights with you soon!
