Homosassa, Florida – At approximately 11:34 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue units were dispatched to a location on W. Homosassa Trail (County Road 490), due to a reported fire involving a mobile home, with a person possibly entrapped inside it.

Fire units arrived at the unit to find a recreational vehicle (RV) 75% involved in flames. A hose line was deployed to begin suppression efforts. Searches by firefighters confirmed that a pet had been safely removed from the RV. The eastbound lane of W. Homosassa Trail was closed to ensure safety.
The fire was brought under control within minutes, and power to the RV was safely disconnected.

The fire was contained without extension to nearby structures. Crews conducted overhaul and salvage operations, retrieving and protecting as many of the owner's belongings as possible.

No injuries were reported to fire personnel or the sole occupant of the RV. However, his dog suffered from smoke inhalation and was treated on scene. Fire rescue used a pet oxygen mask, and the dog responded positively to the oxygen treatment.

It was determined that the fire had originated from a malfunctioning RV refrigerator. The appliance overheated while powered on, which ignited the nearby wall and attic's foam insulation. The fire eventually vented through the RV’s skylight. A working smoke detector was present and activated during the fire.

The RV was determined a total loss, with an estimated $32,000 in damages, and another $5,000 in loss of the RV's contents. The owner told fire officials that the RV was insured. The owner was provided with information on contacting administrative support related to the fire. Victim advocate services were also requested to assist the displaced resident.

Citrus County Fire Rescue reminds residents to regularly check their smoke detectors and electrical appliances, especially in mobile homes and RVs. Early detection can save lives and reduce damage.
