Homosassa, Florida – At 3:19 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2025,,Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR) responded to S. Roebuck Way in Homosassa due to a reported shed fire.
Firefighters arrived on scene to find that the fire to an 8-by-10-foot metal shed had already been extinguished by the shed's occupant before firefighters arrived. Citrus County Sheriff’s Office deputies were already on scene and in the backyard of the residence with the property owner and a friend of the property owner.
According to statements made by the shed's occupant (at the time of the fire), he'd been sleeping inside the shed when he awakened to find a small fire around some electrical cords, and he quickly extinguished the flames using a garden hose.
Firefighters confirmed that the fire was fully extinguished, and used the garden hose to cool smoldering areas. They also checked for potential remaining hazards using a thermal imaging camera, but no further dangers were found.
The loss of the shed and its contents was estimated at $7,500. No injuries were reported.
Fire Safety Reminder - Proper Use of Extension Cords:
Citrus County Fire Rescue reminds residents to use extension cords safely, and never as a permanent power source. Overloaded or damaged extension cords can overheat and cause fires. Always ensure that a cord is rated for its intended use; avoid running extension cords under rugs or through doorways, and never use them to power a high-wattage appliance for an extended period of time.
IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE, CALL 9-1-1.
