UPDATED:  Jake Bryant, 44, of Inglis, FL, was arrested by the Levy County Sheriff's Office, January 13, 2025, charged with fleeing from law enforcement with disregard as to the safety of persons or property, operating a motorcycle without a license, driving on a permanently revoked driver's license, battery, and destroying, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence ($41,000 bond).
According to the arrest report, at 10:20 am on January 9, 2025, a deputy on patrol in Inglis observed an orange motorcycle, with no visible tag, that was traveling east on County Road 40 West. The deputy turned around to follow the motorcycle, to ensure it had no tag, and the motorcycle turned onto Allen Ave. The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop as they both approached U.S. Highway 19, and the driver looked at the deputy, shaking his head to indicate "no," according to the report, and accelerated away from the deputy.
The deputy pursued the motorcycle, heading north on U.S. Highway 19, where the driver failed to stop at the red traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. Highway 19 and County Road 40 - almost running into a truck that was turning east onto County Road 40. The motorcycle continued north on U.S. Highway 19 until it turned west onto Gladys Ave., where the driver almost lost control of the motorcycle.
The deputy's pursuit was cancelled near the intersection of County Road 40A and SE Butler Road, but the deputy observed the motorcycle turn north onto Hammock Road, running a stop sign, and veering left onto SE Butler Road, traveling north.
The deputy reported that within a minute after he turned around to travel in a different direction after the pursuit was canceled, he was dispatched to a traffic crash that occurred - between the same orange motorcycle the deputy had been in pursuit of and a semi-truck - on SE Butler Road at SE 187th Lane. Witnesses showed the deputy a dash camera video of the traffic crash that showed the motorcycle strike the right front of the truck as it was making a left turn. The rider was displaced from the motorcycle and limped away into the tree line to the west of the crash area.
The deputy located Jake Bryant, who was walking nearby; he asked the deputy why he was harassing him, according to the report. Paramedics with Levy County Public Safety arrived on scene to provide medical care. Although Bryant's leg was bleeding, he only wanted his finger looked at, which was also bleeding. Bryant, who lives just north of the accident location, was wearing different clothing from the clothing worn by the motorcycle driver. He said he'd injured his leg earlier that morning.
As the deputy was unable to positively identify Bryant as the driver of the motorcycle at the time of the crash, Bryant was released from custody. However, on January 13, 2025, the deputy was investigating another case on SE Butler Road, when a person at the residence told the deputy that he'd been released from jail on January 10, 2025, and when he returned to the SE Butler Road residence, Bryant had bragged to him about being on a motorcycle that crashed while a deputy was pursuing him.
Bryant was taken into custody. The report stated, that upon reviewing the video a second time, the deputy was able to identify Bryant as the driver of the motorcycle that crashed.
