Hernando, Florida – On Friday, November 15, 2024, at approximately 10:09 am, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a residence located on E. Dale Ct. in Hernando due to a reported fire.

Firefighters arrived at the location to find a double wide mobile home with an enclosed porch, 30% involved with heavy fire conditions. The power company was already on scene and pulled the electrical meter for safety purposes.

A defensive attack was initiated with a handline, focused on fire suppression and salvage, while a second handline was used offensively and advanced into the home from the side, Additional resources supported fire suppression, a water supply, and mop-up operations. Overhaul efforts were extensive due to a significant fuel load inside the home. A rehab unit provided firefighter rehabilitation on the scene of the fire.

Searches located no occupants inside the home. Although the structure sustained significant damage, no injuries were reported.

Following the completion of fire suppression, mop up activities, and the preliminary fire investigation -  which determined that the fire was accidental, caused by the electrical source of an electric fireplace - the last fire unit cleared the scene at 12:59 pm.

Firefighters from the Hernando, Citrus Springs, Pine Ridge, Connell Heights and Highlands fire stations responded to the location, along with a rescue unit, a safety captain, and the rehab unit from the Citrus Springs Fire Station.

Use Electric Fireplaces Safely:
Electric fireplaces, while convenient and decorative, can pose significant fire risks if not used and maintained properly. To reduce the risk of a fire:
• Always plug electric fireplaces directly into a wall outlet; never use an extension cord or power strip.
• Inspect cords and plugs regularly for signs of damage or wear; do not use the electric fireplace if you do see any sign of damage or wear - replace it.
• Turn off and unplug the fireplace when not in use, especially before leaving the house or going to bed.
• Ensure the area around the fireplace is free of flammable materials, such as curtains, furniture, toys or other items.

IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE, DIAL 9-1-1.
