Bronson, Florida - On Tuesday afternoon, September 18, 2024, Levy County staff members working at Blue Springs Park, located at 4550 NE 94th Place in Bronson, contacted Matt Weldon, Levy County Parks and Recreation and Mosquito Control Director, with information that they were hearing gunshots.

Director Weldon investigated  the incident and established that three people were shooting guns in the adjoining Devil’s Hammock Wildlife Management Area in Otter Creek, Florida. He requested that an officer from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) respond to the park.

The FWC, with the assistance of Director Weldon, located three people in the wooded area - who had fired hundreds of rounds within Devil's Hammock Park, causing damage to trees and at least one sign - along with four firearms, which included two nine-millimeter pistols, a tactical shotgun, and an AR-15 rifle.

It was alleged that one of the suspects was planning to sell the firearms to the two other individuals, who were testing them before the sale.

All three were charged with the destruction of public property. None of the three suspects reside within Levy County, Florida.

The Levy County Board of County Commissioners expressed gratitude to Director Weldon for his ongoing commitment to preserving Levy County's natural resources.
