Homosassa uninsured 5th-wheel camper catches fire after power surge

Homosassa, Florida — At 11:53 pm on Friday, August 9, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to W. Main St. in Homosassa due to a report of a recreational vehicle (RV) fire. Responders arrived at the location to find an approximately 30-foot-long fifth wheel trailer, with flames involving approximately half of the trailer.
An offensive attack was initiated, and the fire was brought under control at 12:05 am. The power was secured. Mop-up and overhaul procedures were conducted to ensure the fire was completely extinguished, and the last unit cleared the scene at 1:29 am.
According to fire rescue, the trailer’s owner noticed an orange glow near the refrigerator area following a series of power surges, then exited the trailer and called 911. The owner advised fire rescue personnel that there was no insurance on the trailer.
Crews assisted the owner in retrieving personal belongings from the trailer.
The burn pattern indicated that the fire originated behind the refrigerator and is believed to be accidental.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters from the Connell Heights, Homosassa and Sugarmill Woods fire stations responded to the scene, along with a safety captain.
