Fire extinguished at Homosassa vacation property rekindles, rendering the uninsured home a total loss

Homosassa, Florida — At 10:12 pm on Monday, August 5, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a residence located on W. Halls River Rd. in Homosassa, due to a reported fire. First responders arrived at the location to find a single-story, 1800 square foot wood frame home heavily involved in smoke and flames. Firefighting operations were initiated, complicated 1.5 to 2 feet of water around the property due to flooding from Hurricane Debby. Searches revealed no people inside the home.
The fire was declared under control at 10:39 pm, and mop up operations were initiated. Duke Energy arrived on scene and secured the power supply at the meter and transformer. All units completed assignments, and the last unit cleared the scene at 11:51 pm.
The cause and origin of the fire was undetermined after the investigation; however the fire is believed to be accidental. The homeowner advised fire personnel that the home is used as a vacation property, and it is not insured. No injuries were reported.
At 1:37am the next morning, Tuesday, August 6, 2024, fire rescue was again dispatched to the same location as the structure fire had reignited. First responders arrived to find the home fully involved with fire. Fire operations began, and the fire was brought under control at 2:13 am. All units completed their assignments, and the last unit cleared the scene at 3:50 am. The cause and origin of the fire's rekindling was undetermined after investigation, and the structure was a total loss. The homeowner was notified of the second fire incident, as well.
Firefighters from the Connell Heights, Homosassa, Sugarmill Woods, Pine Ridge and Kensington fire stations responded to the scene, along with two rescue units.
