UPDATED:  Richard Yeater, 37, of Inglis, FL, was arrested by the Levy County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) at 4:18 am, June 10, 2024, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill; battery, a repeat offense; firing a rifle inside a dwelling, possession of a weapon/ammunition by a convicted Florida felon, and possession of a firearm in violation of an injunction ($160,000 bond).
Several deputies arrived at an Inglis residence due to a caller, the victim, reporting an incident that had just occured involving a firearm. The victim said that he and his girlfriend were barricaded inside  his second floor bedroom with the door locked, and Yeater was inside the house, likely in possession of an AR 15 rifle, breaking items amd yelling.
Deputies made a staging area, just north of the residence, located on SE 20th Ave. in Inglis. Deputies had phone contact with the victim (who was still upstairs). The victim briefly stepped out of the bedroom to check to see if the rifle was in the location where he'd last seen it, and it was not; it was presumably in the possession of Yeater. A short time later, deputies spotted a man - who matched Yeater's description - walking down the roadway near the deputies' location. He raised his hands, as instructed to do by deputies, and identified himself as Yeater. He was taken into custody.
According to the victim, he and Yeater had gotten into an argument while sitting near the hot tub in the back yard, and as he started to walk away, Yeater slapped the right side of his face, and he (the victim) pushed Yeater away and attepted to walk up the steps to the house. He said that Yeater tripped him, and he (the victim) placed Yeater into a hold, telling him he'd let him go if he would calm down, and the victim let Yeater go. He said Yeater continued the argument, following him as he walked up the stairs, and on the second flight of stairs, Yeater kicked his buttocks. As they reached the upstairs porch, he said, Yeater grabbed a 2-inch-wide, 1-inch-thick, 5 feet-long board that had nails sticking out of one end, and threatened to hit him with it. He said Yeater then swung the board, hitting the door frame, breaking the board into two pieces. He said Yeater was becoming more aggressive, so he told his girlfriend to get his gun and ordered Yeater out of his house. He said Yeater punched his face with a closed fist, and he swung back at Yeater. He said Yeater swung a vacuum cleaner at him, and he went to the living room, grabbed his AR 15 rifle and pointed it at Yeater, ordering him to leave the home. He said Yeater rushed him, tackling him to the ground, fighting him for possession of the rifle. He said Yeater fired three rounds into the ceiling, then asked him, "Why are you shooting your own house?" He said Yeater overpowered him, got on top of him and said, "You better kill me; if not, I'm going to come back and kill you and burn your house down." He said he broke free from Yeater, left his AR 15 rifle in the living room, grabbed his pistol, and barricaded himself and his girlfriend inside his upstairs bedroom.
The witness, the victim's girlfriend, told deputies that she viewed most of the altercation, and verified the victim's account of the incident.
Yeater confirmed that he'd gotten into an argument with the victim and admitted that he'd fired the rifle into the ceiling three times.
Deputies found the rifle on the porch. They found half of a broken board with nails outside the house, by the front door, and the other half in the front yard. In the front room, deputies found a trash can knocked over and a broken vacuum cleaner. They found three spent shell casings in the living room and three holes in the ceiling. A deputy also noted that the victim had a black eye and several red marks on his body from the physical altercation.
According to the arrest report, Yeater is a three-time convicted felon; his last felony conviction was in Polk County Florida on September 16, 2013, for second degree arson and battery. On May 10, 2010, Yeater was issued a non-expiring Polk County docket barring him from owning or possessing a firearm.
