St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO)
According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO) Facebook page, on May 29, SJSO deputies stopped a vehicle driven by 42 year-old Alexandria Xavier Mason, a woman who had an active felony warrant out of Citrus County for failure to appear in court on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
After the initial traffic stop was conducted near Interstate 95 and State Road 16 near St. Augustine, Florida. a DUI Unit deputy responded to the location and began an investigation into Mason's possible impairment. During the investigation, Mason refused to comply with the deputy's commands, then fled in her vehicle, driving recklessly on Interstate 95, traveling north.
Deputies were assisted by the SJSO Aviation Unit and joined by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) as Mason approached Jacksonville, Florida. The distance between the two cities is approximately 38 miles, and the traffic pursuit covered about 20 miles, at speeds up to 90 miles per hour. On Interstate 95 near Atlantic Blvd. (Jacksonville), FHP Troopers successfully executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, which ended the pursuit, and Mason was taken into custody. A citizen vehicle was impacted during the PIT maneuver, with no injuries to the citizen; the FHP Trooper who conducted the PIT maneuver sustained significant hand injuries.
Inside Mason's vehicle, officers found a stolen firearm, drug paraphernalia, and several unspecified controlled substances. Mason was placed under arrest by the FHP and booked into the Duval County Jail, located in Jacksonville.
The FHP filed additional charges against Mason: aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, armed possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving under the influence (DUI) with property damage
The SJSO will be adding additional charges of DUI, refusal to comply with a lawful order, resisting a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, and aggravated fleeing and eluding.
