Lecanto residence razed by fire; pet dies; firefighter injured and treated on scene

Lecanto, Florida — At 6:08 am on Sunday, June 2, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a residence located on W. Southern St. in Lecanto, due to a report of a fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a significant fire engulfing approximately 80% of an 1,800 square foot wooden residence, and a detached garage to the right of the home exposed to the fire. 

All the occupants were safely evacuated, with the exceptioon of one pet who was found deceased.

The power was secured, and a water supply was established. Handlines were used for the interior, and a safety line was established as a precaution for the exterior. The fire was brought under control at 6:52 am. After overhaul and mop-up operations, the final unit cleared the scene at 10:03 am.

One fire rescue crew member sustained an injury during interior operations, which was promptly assessed and addressed on scene.

An investigation was conducted by the State Fire Marshal. It was determined that the fire was accidental, and there were no remaining hazards. The scene was deemed safe and returned to the homeowner's control. Necessary support services were arranged for the homeowner. 

Firefighters from the Rock Crusher, Homosassa Trail, Pine Ridge, Kensington and Hernando fire stations arrived on scene, along with a Rescue Unit and Rehab Unit.
