The report stated that the front of Max's leg, near the joint, had a large laceration with visable red flesh, fluid discharge and moderate swelling. Max, who had been living with Ms. Kah for ten years, according to the report, also had large patchy areas to his tail and hind quarters that were irritated and devoid of hair, likely due to excessive scratching, the report stated. A Citrus County Animal Control Officer told the deputy that he believed the dog showed signs of glaucoma (an eye disease), dermatitis (skin irritation) from a possible flea allergy, and a leg injury that was possibly infected and potentially life threatening. A witness at the residence told the deputy, that when he first saw the dog, about nine months previously, Max's leg injury appeared to be a scar, not an open wound, that had gradually gotten worse, and he'd thought about putting him down (killing him) because it was cheaper than having him euthanized (killed in a painless manner) by a veterinarian.
