Inverness, Florida - About 9:00 pm, Monday evening, January 14, deputies with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office responded to an E. Dawson Dr., Inverness residence in response to a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, deputies found a victim, lying on the driveway with apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services arrived a short time later and began treating the victim, who was air-lifted to a Marion County, Florida hospital for medical treatment where the victim was later pronounced deceased.

According to a CCSO press release, witnesses told deputies that the suspected shooter, 29 year-old Daniel Arthur Redman who had been released from prison on January 9, 2022, had tried to break into their home before he fled on foot.

Deputies began searching for the suspect, with the assistance of a K-9 unit, and within minutes, the suspect was tracked to a motor home, about a quarter-mile away, holding a hostage who had obvious injuries. Deputies gave verbal commands for the suspect to release the hostage, and he eventually complied. When the hostage was safe, deputies ordered the suspect to show his hands, but when he refused to comply and reached behind his back toward his waistband, one of the deputies fired a shot, fearing for the safety of others nearby. Deputies immediately secured the suspect and rendered first aid until he was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment, in unstated condition.

"In what has proven to be a terrifying night for our community, the immediate actions of our deputies saved other victims from further terror caused by this convicted felon," said Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast. "Thanks to our deputies' quick thinking and superior performance, they were able to protect our community from further harm."

Numerous charges are pending in this case, which is still under investigation. The agency stated that additional details in regard to this incident will be released when possible.

As is common practice with deputy involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) responded to the area to conduct an independent investigation into this incident, and the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
