Law enforcement officers not only respond to calls of a criminal nature, they frequently assist other first responding agencies on emergency medical calls. According to Lieutenant Scott Tummond with the Levy County Sheriff's Office, just before midnight on October 21, 2021, deputies responded to one such call where a distraught man had used a knife to cut his own throat in an attempt to take his life.

Three deputies, Deputy Cody Weaver, Sergeant Jeremy Dean and Corporal Tucker Gaffey, arrived on the scene to find the injured man, standing in the yard, bleeding profusely from his neck. Deputies had no reason to arrest the man and attempted to render first aid to his injuries and control the bleeding, but during the incident that occurred over a period of about thirty minutes, the man was resistent to the deputies and medical personnel from the Levy County Department of Public Safety, exposing them to his blood, which necessitated the use of a Taser (electronic stun weapon) to force the man into complaince for his own safety and the safety of others on scene. Deputies learned that the man, who was sufering from severe paranoia, was under the influence of methamphetamine. He was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

A short video was created by the LCSO to serve as a grim reminder of the drug epidemic and the dangers faced by emergency responders on a daily basis, every time they put on a uniform in service to the community.
