Two killed in NE Citrus County head-on collision at SR 200 & SR 491

A nearly head-on collision in northeast Citrus County at 12:18 pm, Wednesday afternoon, June 22, resulted in the death of both drivers at the scene of the crash.

According to othe Florida Highway Patarol, an 82 year-old Hernando, Florida man was driving a sport utility vehicle, traveling north in the southbound lane of SR 200, north of CR 491 (Lecanto Hwy.).

The second driver, a 43 year-old Inverness, Florida woman was also driving a sport utility vehicle, traveling south in the southbound lane of SR-200, north of CR 491, and the man's vehicle hit the woman's vehicle nearly head-on. After the impact, the man's vehicle rotated to final rest of SR 200, and the woman's vehicle rotated to final rest on CR 491.

Citing Macy's Law, the Florida Highway Patrol no longer provides identifying information of people or vehicles inolved in traffic crashes in its press releases.

State officials recently decided to upgrade this dangerous intersection with a traffic signal and an expanded right turn lane on CR 491, lighting and crosswalks, likely within approximately 18 months.
