Citrus County, Florida - On June 16 and 16, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office hosted the Florida Sheriffs Association's (FSA) Cold Case Advisory Commission for their first in-person gathering since the Covid pandemic began.
The commission, chaired by Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast, reviews cases from across the state to provide guidance and support from various subject matter experts, and provides additional training opportunities for law enforcement personnel.
"The purpose of the FSA Cold Case Advisory Commission is to provide resources to agencies," said Sheriff Prendergast. "With the additional support of the FSA and the expertise of the Commission Committee members, we are striving to find resolutions to unsolved cold cases. The victims and their families deserve every resource available to find justice."
During this training session, the commission heard from the Office of the Attorney General Statewide Prosecution, the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUS), and speakers from the University of South Florida's Forensic Anthropology Department.
The Cold Case Advisory Commission reviews unsolved homicide and missing person cases. The commission committee is comprised of various experts in their respective fields. These experts are presented with unsolved cases to review, in order to offer advice and new concepts on developing evidence to assist with solving the homicide or missing person case.
Serving as Vice-Chairs for the commission are Sheriff Paul Blackman of Highlands County, FL and Sheriff Bob Johnson of Santa Rosa County, FL. The commission was developed in 2015 and continues to be an asset to Floridians from all over the state.
Through the efforts of the Cold Case Advisory Commission, the FSA and CCSO are continuing their commitment to never forgetting or closing a cold case until it is solved.
