A Citrus County duo was arrested by the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, shortly after 7:00 am, June 25, when deputies were dispatched to an Inverness residence where a theft and battery had just occurred.
The victim told deputies that he was inside his home when he heard sounds in his back yard. He said he went outside and saw a green sports utility vehicle (SUV) parked near his shed, which was hooked up to his personal trailer, which he said had gone missing several days earlier, and two men were attempting to load a large orange Kubota mower onto his trailer.
He said that the mower belongs to his landlord and had been stored inside a shed. He said he hadn't reported his trailer stolen when it went missing because he thought his son may have used it and parked it somewhere else. (His son later verified he'd not used the trailer.)
The victim told a deputy that he confronted the two men, Dominic Richard Murray, 49, of Beverly Hills, and Richard Anthony Carroll, 51, of Crystal River, and they got into an argument, with Murray and Carroll yelling that he owed money to Mr. Carroll.
The victim said that Murray armed himself with a large pole and battered him with it, striking his head, body, and legs. He said he became unconscious for a short time due to the blows on his head. He said the pole broke into three pieces, and when he grabbed one of the pieces to defend himself, Murray told him that he had a gun and would shoot him with it.
He said he then armed himself with an ax and ran across the street to a neighbor's house. He said the two men finished loading the trailer and left the property, and deputies arrived a short time later.
The deputy reported that the victim had fresh injuries that were consistent with his account of the incident, that he found the damaged fiberglass pole lying on the ground, and the padlock on the shed appeared to have been pried open.
A witness told deputies that Carroll had called him about 4:00 am, asking him to help him retrieve some tools from a house in Invernesss. He said agreed to help Murray and Carroll, and while they were on their way to Inverness, they stopped at a Crede, Ave., Crystal River residence and picked up a trailer they said a friend had given them permission to use. He said, when they arrived at the Inverness location, the gate was open, and he was told to drive around to the back of the house to the shed.
Murray and Carroll were taken into custody at the Inverness RaceTrac gas station. Murray was charged with grand theft of $10,000 or more, but less than $20,000; aggravated battery using a deadly weapon, possession of burglary tools, and armed robbery ($34,000 bond). Carroll was charged with grand theft of $10,000 or more, but less than $20,000, and armed robbery ($22,000 bond).
