As you may know, Florida Springs Council and Rainbow River Conservation are teaming up to stop the development of a 90-acre Westgate Resort (read more about Westgate) and RV Park along the east side of the Rainbow River in Dunnellon.

The fate of this development and the Rainbow River rests primarily in the hands of the Dunnellon City Council which represents the 1,800 residents of this small Florida town.

There are two recent developments:

1. Earlier this month, the Dunnellon City Council agreed to delay consideration of the Comprehensive Plan Amendment and zoning change requested by the developer and hold a public workshop on the development. Although this is a step in the right direction, the City Council continues to rely on potentially dangerous in-person meetings with limited options for virtual public participation. Dunnellon residents and those with a stake in the future of the Rainbow River should not have to choose between their community and their health.

2. Distressingly, an effort to remove two Rainbow River Conservation members from the Dunnellon City Planning Commission advanced on Monday evening. The Dunnellon City Council voted 4-1 to schedule a public hearing to remove two long-standing public servants because of their association with the local environmental group Rainbow River Conservation, which opposes the Resort.

Springs Council staff and lawyers are working with local residents to get the word out and stop this development. Find out more, get your friends involved, get a yard sign if you live in the area, and directly support our work to Save Rainbow River by visiting http://dontruinrainbow.org/
