Chiefland, Florida - On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, representatives from Haven - Tri-Counties Hospice Care Center in Chiefland, Florida and Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum recognized and expressed gratitude for the service and sacrifice of Chiefland resident, Kenneth Carpenter. Surrounded by his family and friends, Mr. Carpenter humbly accepted recognition for his lifelong achievements serving his country and community.
The spry and soft spoken, 101 year-old Mr. Carpenter served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from January 1941 until June of 1945, achieving the rank of Sergeant. After WWII, Mr. Carpenter worked in utilities in West Virginia. He made Chiefland his home in 1974, where he worked for Central Florida Electric Co-Op until his retirement.
Haven Hospice RN Case Manager Scott Knudsen and Volunteer Coordinator Vondla Sullivan, along with Trenton (Florida) Marine Corps Ladies Auxiliary representative Arlene Lang, presented gifts to Mr. Carpenter that included a flag in a display case enscribed with a plaque that stated, "Sgt. Ken Carpenter, U.S. Army, January 1941 - June 1945," a patriotic lap quilt, and an American flag pin. Sheriff McCallum presented Mr. Carpenter with a certificate of appreciation and a Levy County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) challenge coin.
Mr. Carpenter is looking forward to celebrating his 102nd birthday, November 24, with his family, which includes his wife Lucille, a son, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
