Paleontologists discover fossils of extinct elephant near Williston, FL

According to a May 30, 2023 article posted on the Florida Museum of Natural History website, written by Jerald Pinson, researchers and volunteers at the Florida Museum of Natural History have unearthed fossils, including one that may be the largest gomphothere ever discovered in Florida. 

Gomphotheres, which are extinct relatives of elephants, lived in the area about five and a half million years ago.

The fossil was uncovered in the Montbrook Fossil Dig area near Williston, Florida in an area that was once a river.
