D.A.B. Constructors, Inc., located at 62 Hwy 40 W in Inglis, FL, in operation for more than twenty years, with two asphalt plant locations at 1233 Commerce St. in Leesburg, FL and 3301 N.E. Parkway in Spring Hill, FL, has apparently closed its doors, as of Monday, July 26, potentially leaving several incompleted multi-million dollar projects at several locations in Florida. In a statement, the company said it will leave those projects to its bonding companies. The company's website states it has 250 employees, although some media reports are stating the amount at 400 employees.
After several projects fell behind in recent years, the death blow, according to a company statement, was how the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) handled the ongoing $33.6 million diverging diamond interchange at State Road 56 and Interstate 75 in Wesley Chapel (Pasco County), FL, which was several months behind schedule. The company has received $24.4 million from the state for completed work on this project.
D.A.B. Constructors claimed that the FDOT project had significant design flaws, which negatively impacted the costs and timeline of the project. Debora and William Bachschmidt, DAB Constructors president and vice-president, released a statement that the company has suffered a "classic domino-effect" due to being forced to divert resources from other ongoing projects, draining the company of operating capitol making it impossible to sustain its operations.
Other non-completed, ongoing projects by the company include several projects in Citrus County, FL (timelines and dollar amounts may be slightly off due to varied reports over time):
• 6.8 miles resurfacing and a multi-use trail project on U.S. Hwy. 19 from the Hernando County line to W. Green Acres St. in Homosassa (a $20 million project of which the company has received $5.3 million).
• 2.1 miles widening of U.S. Hwy. 19 from W. Green Acres St. to W. Jump Ct. in Homosassa (a $32 million project of which $29 million was paid that started in Nov. 2016, scheduled to be completed in spring of 2019).
• 4.7 miles widening of U.S. Hwy. 19 from W. Jump Ct. in Homosassa to Fort Island Trail in Crystal River (a $51 million project of which $25.8 million has been paid that started in Nov. 2018 and scheduled to be completed by fall of 2022).
• Citrus Springs roads resurfacing project (a $3.4 million contract of which about $652,000 has been paid and slightly more than half completed). The company stated that this project has been delayed by a shortage of materials.
