Inverness, Florida - On Tuesday morning, May 11, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) unveiled its Fallen Law Enforcement Memorial, which was erected at the agency's Inverness location, 1 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.
The CCSO began the initial phase of planning and developing the memorial in May of 2019 to honor the three Citrus County law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty: Deputy Sheriff James McIntosh McMullen, Floral City Marshal J. W. Newsome, and Master Detective Aubrey Fred Johnson.
The watch of Deputy Sheriff's James McIntosh McMullen ended on December 26, 1899, when he was assassinated in his home. Deputy McMullen left behind a wife, a son, and two daughters.
Floral City Maschall J.W. Newsome was ambushed and shot in a local saloon on March 3, 1908, while attempting to apprehend a murder suspect. Deputy Newsom left behind a wife and three children.
Master Detective Aubrey Fred Johnson lost his life on February 11, 1997, when his patrol vehicle was struck by another car while he was on duty. Detective Johnson had served with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office for sixteen years prior to his death. His wife attended the ceremony and admired the memorial with Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast at her side.
