Citrus County, Florida - A woman was killed, and her passenger received minor injuries, as the result of a single-vehicle traffic crash that occured early Monday morning, Feb. 1, in Crystal River, Florida.

According to a press release by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the crash occurred at 3:15 am, as the 20 year-old female driver from Hernando, Florida was traveling west on W. Fort Island Trail, 3 miles east of W Waterwood Dr., and failed to maintain control of the vehicle at a left ccurve in the roadway. The vehicle departed from the roadway, traveled onto the north shoulder, overturned several times, and collided with a tree.

The driver was transported to a local hospital where she later expired from injuries sustained in the crash. The  passenger, a 20 year-old woman from Beverly Hills, Florida, received minor injuries. Each of the two passengers was wearing a seatbelt.

Citing Marsy's Law (Florida's victim protection law) as the reason, the FHP no longer identifies the people or specific models of vehicles involved in its press releases of traffic crashes.
