Crystal River, Florida - A three-vehicle traffic crash that occurred in Crystal River at 3:06 pm on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 29, resulted in the death of a 33 year-old woman from Tarpon Springs, FL, who died at the scene of the crash, and resulted in serious injuries to the four passengers in the other two vehicles. The crash occurred on N. Citrus Ave. at W. Basilico St. in Crystal River.
According to a press release by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the first vehicle, a sedan driven by the woman from Tarpon Springs who was killed in the crash, was traveling north on N. Citrus Ave., approaching W. Basilico St., behind a second vehicle, also a sedan, that was also traveling north on N. Citrus Ave. and slowed down to stop due to stopped traffic ahead. For unknow reasons the Tarpon Springs woman failed to stop and her sedan collided into the rear of the other sedan, which redirected her vehicle into the southbound lane of N. Citrus Ave., and her vehicle was struck on the driver's side by the third vehicle, a pickup truck that was traveling south on N. Citrus Ave., just north of W. Basilico St.
The second sedan was driven by a 69 year-old woman from Clearwater, FL, who carried a 77 year-old male passenger, also from Clearwater. The pickup truck was driven by a 71 year-old man from Lecanto, FL, who carried a 95 year-old male paassenger, also from Lecanto. The press release stated that each of the five passengers involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.
In its press releases, the FHP no longer identifies the people or the specific models of vehicles involved in traffic crashes, citing Marsy's Law, Florida's victim protection law, as the reason.
