The crash occurred on CR 495 (N. Citrus Ave.), south of W. Dunklin St., in Crystal River.

According to a press release by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) the man was driving a pickup truck, traveling north on CR 495, approaching W. Dunklin St., when the truck, for unknown reasons, departed from the roadway, traveled onto the east grass shoulder, then traveled back onto the northbound lanes of the roadway. The truck then rotated into the private entrance of 7985 N. The press release stated that the passenger was critically injuried, and the driver later expired, from injuries sustained during the crash, that neither of the two was wearing a seatbelt.
