Crystal River man suffers minor injuries in wrong-way SR 589 tollroad crash; Clermont man charged with DUI

Pasco County, Florida - A traffic crash on State Road 589 (Suncoast Parkway), south of the intersection with SR 52 in Pasco County, FL at 10:43 pm on Friday, Oct. 2, resulted in minor injuries to a 62 year-old Crystal River, FL man driving a pickup truck and also to the 44 year-old Clermont, FL man driving a sedan, who was later arrested.
According to a press release by the Florida Highway Patrol, the sedan was traveling south (wrong direction) on SR 589 in the northbound inside lane, south of SR 52, while the truck was traveling north on SR 589. Near the 25 mile milepost, the two vehicles collided nearly head-on.
After the impact, both vehicles rotated to final rest, with the sedan along the inside shoulder, and the truck against the concrete barrier wall.
Troopers later arrested the driver of the sedan, Ricardo Ortiz Gomez, for driving under the influence and delivered him to the Pasco County Jail in Brooksville, FL. The release stated that it is unknown where Mr. Ortiz Gomez began traveling in the wrong direction, but it was determined that he was traveling in the wrong direction for several miles prior to the crash.
Both drivers were wearing a seatbelt.
