Homosassa (Citrus County), Florida - An 87 year-old man from Hernando, Florida died as the result of a traffic crash that occurred at 2:38 pm on Sunday afternoon, January 5, 2025 in Homosassa.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was driving a Kia Forte compact car, which was stopped at a stop sign located at 5340 West Grover Cleveland Boulevard.  While the car was stopped at the stop sign, the driver suffered a medical emergency, and his foot came off the brake, which caused the vehicle to travel west, across the highway,  and strike a posted sign, where the car came to a stop.

While the vehicle was stopped against the sign, the driver depressed the accelerator, which caused the car's wheels to spin. As the wheels spun, the grass under the vehicle caught fire, which rapidly spread to the vehicle.

Citrus County Sheriff's Office deputies and first responders with Citrus County Fire Rescue arrived on scene and extricated the driver from the car.  The driver was transported to an area hospital where he later expired.
