Fanning Springs man dies as result of crash with tractor/trailer in Chiefland

Chiefland, Florida - A two vehicle traffic crash between a tractor/trailer rig and a sedan, that occurred in Chiefland at 6:50 am on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, resulted in the death of the driver of the sedan, a 68 year-old man from Fanning Springs, Florida.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the tractor/trailer was driven by a 57 year-old man from Haley, Alabama, who was attempting to back the tractor/trailer into the Cash and Carry Pole Barns, located at 13874 U.S. Highway 19, to offload cargo. The tractor/trailer was facing east, spread across the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 19.
At the same time, the 68 year-old man from Fanning Springs, Florida was traveling south on U.S. Highway 19, in the outside, southbound lane, and collided with the trailer, which was spread across the southbound lanes. After the impact, the sedan came to rest under the trailer, facing south. The tractor/trailer was at rest, facing northeast across the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 19.
The driver of the sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. No mention was made as to the condition of the tractor/trailer driver.
The southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 19 were closed, and traffic was rerouted until the lanes were reopened at 12:25 pm.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Levy County Department of Public Safety (DPS), Fanning Springs Fire and Rescue, and Chiefland Fire and Rescue assisted the Florida Highway Patrol on-scene.
The crash investigation is ongoing.
