Inverness, Florida -- A $1.3 million project to resurface portions of the Withlacoochee State Trail in Citrus County, Florida is scheduled to begin Wednesday, August 14, 2024. The construction will take place in segments, with one segment area of the trail closed at a time. Each segment area will be closed around-the-clock for up to several weeks, beginning with Segment 1 closing on August 14th.

Segment 1 is from mile marker (MM) 27 to mile marker (MM) 28.58 (approximately south of the Fort Cooper Trailhead to Eden Drive). The segment is anticipated to reopen to trail users within the first two weeks of September, weather permitting. For safety, the public is asked to stay off the closed segment at all times until it reopens.

This design-build project will repair and repave several areas of the Withlacoochee State Trail in or near the city of Inverness and the Hernando area in Citrus County. Design began in May 2024 and construction is expected to begin August 14, 2024.

The project will rehabilitate a total of 2.76 miles comprised of several trail sections that are in poor condition from approximately the mile markers (MM) 27.00 to MM 28.58 - MM 28.59 to MM 28.95 - MM 30.03 to MM 30.40 - and MM 35.81 to MM 36.15. The construction will also include providing mid-block crossings (including high emphasis crosswalks) at E Lake Lane near MM 35.94, and at E Line Drive near MM 36.09.

The construction will take place in segments (described below), with one segment area of the trail closed at a time. Each segment area will be closed around-the-clock for up to several weeks, beginning with the Segment 1 closing in mid-August. We’ll update this page with approximate starting and ending dates during each segment of construction.

The Withlacoochee State Trail is an existing 46-mile-long paved shared use path built on a converted railroad corridor that connects Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties. The trail begins at the Owensboro Junction Trailhead in Dade City and terminates at the Gulf Junction Trailhead in Citrus Springs. Approximately 29 miles of the trail is in Citrus County.

4 PROJECT SEGMENTS:

• Segment 1:  mile marker 27 to mile marker 28.58 
(south of the Fort Cooper Trailhead to Eden Drive)
        This segment is anticipated to close for construction beginning approximately August 14, 2024, and reopening for public use in early to mid September, weather permitting.

• Segment 2: mile marker 28.59 to mile marker 28.95 
(Eden Drive to just north of Mossy Oak Drive)
        The construction closure date will be announced during construction of Segment 1.

• Segment 3: mile marker 30.03 to mile marker 30.4 
(Liberty Park area to the Lake Henderson Trestle)
        The construction closure date will be announced during construction of Segment 2.

• Segment 4: mile marker 35.81 to mile marker 36.15 
(CR 486/E Norvell Bryant Hwy to north of E Line Drive)
        The construction closure date will be announced during construction of Segment 3.
