Elderly man dies in early morning crash on Fort Island Trail in Crystal River

Crystal River, Florida - An 81 year-old man from Crystal River died as the result of a traffic crash that occurred at 12:30 am, early Wednesday morning, March 27, 2024, in Crystal River.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man killed in the crash was driving a Chevrolet 3500 pickup truck, traveling east on West Fort Island Trail. When he attempted to pass a Kia Sportage sport utility vehicle (SUV) traveling ahead of him, also traveling east on West Fort Island Trail, east of West Audubon Lane, his pickup truck collided into the left side of the Kia SUV.
As a result of the impact, the Chevrolet pickup truck departed from the roadway, entered onto the south shoulder and collided with two trees. The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the crash.
After the impact, the Kia SUV departed from the roadway, entered onto the south shoulder, collided with a cable box, and then struck a tree before overturning. The driver of the Kia SUV, an 18 year-old woman from Beverly Hills, Florida, and her passenger, a 19 year-old man from Crystal River, both suffered minor injuries.
