Moped driver killed and his teen passenger seriously injured in CR 486, Lecanto, FL crash

Lecanto, Florida - A traffic crash involving a moped (small motorcycle) and two other vehicles, that occurred in Lecanto, Florida on Sunday evening, February 25, 2024, resulted in the death of a 28 year-old man from Inverness, Florida and serious injuries to his passenger, a 15 year-old boy from Homosassa, Florida - the two riding the moped.
The crash occurred at 7:30 on County Road 486 (West Norvell Bryant Highway), west of North Betty Point.
According to the Florida Highwsay Patrol, the moped motorcycle, with its two male passengers, was traveling east on County Road 486.
Also traveling east on County Road 486 - behind the moped - was a Kia Optima mid-sized car, driven by a 21 year-old woman from Belleview, Florida. West of North Betty Point, the Kia overtook the moped and collided with it, which resulted in the 28 year-old driver from Inverness, Florida, and his 15 year-old passenger from Homosassa, Florida falling from the moped onto the roadway.
The driver of the moped was then struck by a Chevy Equinox compact crossover sport utility vehicle (SUV), driven by a 75 year-old man from Crystal River, Florida, that was traveling east on County Road 486, behind the Kia Optima car.
The 28 year-old driver of the moped was transported to an area hospital, where he later expired from his injuries. The 15 year-old moped passenger was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
