Levy County, Florida - A hit and run traffic crash that occurred at 6:20 pm on February 24, 2024, resulted in the death of a 74 year-old man from Fort McCoy, Florida who was driving a motorcycle. The crash occurred in northwest Levy County, north of Chiefland and south of Fanning Springs.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 1998 Chevrolet Express van was traveling north on NW 10th Ave., while the motorcycle was traveling east on CR 346A.

The driver of the van - later identified as 31 year-old Demetrio Moreno-Atlahua of Live Oak, Florida -  failed to stop for the stop sign on NW 10th Avenue, at the intersection of CR 346A, which violated the right of way of the motorcycle driver. As a result, the front of the motorcycle crashed into the left front of the van.

The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash as a result of the collision.

Driver Demetrio Moreno-Atlahua and his four passengers ran from the area of the crash. A collaborative effort between the Florida Highway Patrol, Levy County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Corrections, the same day, resulted in all five passengers of the van being taken into custody.

Demetrio Moreno-Atlahua, the driver, was booked into the Levy County Detention Bureau in Bronson, Florida at 4:35 am on February 25, charged with failing to remain at the scene of a crash involving death, and driving without a driver’s license. His bond was set at none.
