Groundbreaking held for CR 491 road widening project in Lecanto

The expansion project will widen a 1.9-mile section of CR 491 (located between Audubon Park Path to Horace Allen Street in Lecanto) to a four-lane divided roadway, connecting to the already-expanded four-lane divided roadway sections directly to the south and north of it.
Also planned are a multi-use path to the west, a sidewalk to the east, and two new traffic signals. These improvements will enhance safety and provide increased capacity to the 491 corridor, which is quickly developing into a bustling commercial hub. The duration of the project is expected to be two years.
“This approval to proceed from the Florida Department of Transportation marks a major milestone accomplished,” said County Administrator Steve Howard. “We look forward to seeing this much-anticipated project become a reality for our community.”
According to Citrus County Commission Chairman Ruthie Schlabach, about 6,000 people travel that section of County Road 491 every day.
