Clearwater teen dies after being struch by SUV while walking in Homosassa

Homosassa, Florida - A 17 year-old girl from Clearwater, Florida died as the result of injuries she suffered when she was struck by a vehicle at 5:15 am on Friday, May 26, 2023 in Homosassa.
 
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a 23 year-old man from St. Petersburg, Florida was driving a 2014 Jeep Cherokee sports utility vehicle (SUV), traveling south on U.S. Highway 19, south of West Cardinal Street, where the girl was walking on the west shoulder of U.S. Highway 19. 

According to the FHP, without warning, the pedestrian walked in an easterly direction across U.S. Highway 19, into the path of the SUV, and the driver unsuccessfully attempted to avoid striking her. As a result of the SUV striking the pedestrian, she suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital where she later expired from injuries sustained during the crash.

The driver of the SUV, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured during the crash.
