Crystal River, Florida - A groundbreaking and ribbon cutting ceremony was held in Crystal River on Tuesday morning, May 16, 2023 for the second phase of the extension of the Suncoast Parkway project into Citrus County - the Suncoast Parkway 2, Phase 2 project. 

Dignitaries who attended the ceremony included Nicola A. Liquori (Executive Director/CEO of Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise), Ralph Massullo, M.D.-R (Florida State Representative), Ruthie Schlabach (Citrus County Commission Chairwoman), and David Gwynn, P.E. (FDOT District Seven Secretary) 

Suncoast Parkway 2 Phase 2 project

According to Florida's Turnpike Enterprise and the FDOT, the Suncoast Parkway 2 Phase 2 project (the second phase of the extension of tollroad SR 589, also known as the Suncoast Parkway, into Citrus County, FL at an estimated cost of $103 million) will be a four-lane (two lanes in each direction) toll facility that extends from SR 44 (W. Gulf to Lake Hwy.) in Crystal River, FL to CR 486 (W. Norvell Bryant Hwy.) in Lecanto, FL, a distance of approximately 3 miles. 

The project will construct an interchange at SR 44 (W. Gulf to Lake Hwy.) in Crystal River, FL to accommodate northbound traffic movements; construction (currently underway) for southbound traffic movements from US 98 in Homosassa, FL to SR 44 (W. Gulf to Lake Hwy.) in Crystal River, FL; and an at-grade intersection at CR 486 (W. Norvell Bryant Hwy.) in Lecanto, FL. 

The completed project will include the roadway, one electronic tolling collection (ETC) location, drainage, lighting, highway signs, traffic signals, guardrails, and sidewalks, along with the continuation of the Suncoast Trail (part of Florida’s Statewide Greenways and Trails System). 

The Suncoast Parkway 2, Phase 2 project is expected to be completed in late 2026, at which time the Suncoast Parkway 2, Phase 3 project is expected to begin.

Suncoast Parkway 2, Phase 3 project

The Suncoast Parkway 2, Phase 3 project will complete the extension of the Suncoast Parkway (tollroad SR 589) through Citrus County, FL - a distance of 10 miles - from CR 486 (W. Norvell Bryant Hwy.) in Lecanto, FL to US 19 (N. Suncoast Blvd.) at Red Led Level, FL (north of Crystal River, FL and south of Inglis, FL).

The Suncoast Parkway 2, Phase 3 project will include a full interchange at CR 486 (W. Norvell Bryant Hwy.) in Lecanto, FL, to accommodate northbound traffic movements; an interchange at CR 495 (Citrus Ave.) and US 19 in Crystal River; realignment of CR 488 (also know as W. Dunnellon Rd., which runs from Crystal River, FL to Dunnallon, FL) to allow for a new interchange at SR 589 (Suncoast Parkway) and US 19 in Red Level, FL.

The completed project will include 2 electronic tolling collection (ETC) locations, drainage, lighting, highway sigs, traffic signals, guardrails, and sidewalks, along with the continuation of the Suncoast Trail (part of Florida’s Statewide Greenways and Trails System).
