One man killed, another seriously injured, in Otter Creek van crash

Levy County, Florida - The driver was killed and his front seat passenger, a 66 year old man from Cedar Key, Florida, was seriously injured in a crash that occurred in Otter Creek, Florida at 11:50 am on Thursday, February 2, 2023, The driver's name and age is pending further investigation.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Buck Island Road, a dirt roadway within a hunting camp area, as the driver was traveling west, driving a van on Buck Island Road, and failed to negotiate a right curve in the roadway. As a result, the van exited the roadway, traveled over a ditch and entered the tree line on the south shoulder. The van overturned and came to rest on its left side, facing a westerly direction within the tree line. 

The driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene by Levy County Fire Rescue. The passenger was transported via ShandsCair helicopter to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida for medical treatment.

The FHP press release stated that neither of the men was wearing a seatbelt.
