Homosassa, Florida - On Sunday night, July 31, 2022, at 11:38 pm in Homosassa, a bicyclist was struck by a 'hit and run' vehicle, occupied by three teenagers, and died at the scene of the crash.
According to a press release by the Florida Highway Patrol, an 18 year-old Inverness youth - William Joseph Cohill - was driving a sedan, traveling west on West Grover Cleveland Boulevard, east of the intersection with South Missouri Drive.
The 40 year-old bicyclist, a Homosassa resident, was also traveling west on West Grover Cleveland Boulevard, and the driver, Mr. Cohill, failed to observe him and collided into the rear of the bicycle and bicyclist who suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash.
Following the collision, Mr. Cohill fled from the scene of the crash, but was located, soon thereafter, by Citrus County deputies in Crystal River, Florida. FHP Troopers later arrested Mr. Cohill, who was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
According to the FHP, Mr. Cohill had two other passengers inside the sedan with him, both 17 years-old and both males, one from Bensalem, Pennsylvania and the other from Crystal River, Florida.
The press release stated that all three youths were wearing a seatbelt and none were injured, and the bicyclist who was killed in the crash was not wearing a helmet.
