Citrus Springs, Florida - The grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Withlacoochee-Dunnellon State Trail Connector was held at 10:30 am, Thursday, March 24, within the new trail underpass, located on the west side of Highway 41 at County Road 39 (W. Withlacoochee Trail) in Citrus Springs (Dunnellon), Florida.
Construction for the $5.4 million Withlacoochee-Dunnellon Trail Connector began in Oct. 2020, to construct a 2.5-mile paved multi-use trail to join the Cross Florida Greenway with the Withlacoochee State Trail, running from Bridges Road in Dunnellon, at the Dunnellon Little League ball fields, to Citrus County Road 39 (W. Wihlacoochee Trail). It features a pedestrian crossing at US 41, near CR 39, that was built as an underpass, rather than an overpass, as a result of public input, which allows pedestrians and bicyclists to continue safely, on an uninterrupted route, between the Withlacoochee State Trail and the Dunnellon Trail. The trail also features a dramatic bridge over the Withlacoochee River.
The Withlacoochee State Trail is a multi-use trail that extends 46 miles from Citrus Springs to Dade City, spanning Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco counties.
Dignitaries who spoke at the event include David Gwynn, FDOT District 7 Secretary; Chuck Hatcher, Acting Director for Florida State Parks; Ron Kitchen, Citrus County Commissioner; Bill White, Mayor of Dunnellon; and Carl Zalak, Marion County Commissioner.
