Homosassa, Florida - Two people were hospitalized in unstated condition as the result of a traffic crash that occurred at 9:00 am, Tuesday, March 8, 2022, on U. S. Highway 19 (S. Suncoast Blvd.), at the intersection of W. Yulee Dr. in Homosassa.
According to a crash report by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a 70 year-old man from Sebasco Estates, Maine, was driving a white 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, traveling south in the left turn lane of US 19, approaching W. Yulee Dr. under a steady green traffic light, and conducted a u-turn to travel north and entered into the direct path of a second vehicle
The second vehicle, a gray 2020 Dodge Challenger two-door car, driven by a 22 year-old man from Titusville, Florida, was traveling north in the center lane of US 19, approaching W. Yulee Dr. under a flashing yellow traffic light.
As a result, the front of the Dodge Challenger collided with the right side of the Chevrolet Silverado in the outside northbound lane of US 19.
After the collision, the Cherolet Silverado came to rest in the outside lane, facing north, and the Dodge Challenger traveled northeast, onto the east shoulder, collided with a ditch, and came to rest facing northeast.
According to the crash report, the driver of the Dodge Challenger, who was not transported from the crash to receive medical care, told the FHP trooper that he was running late for work, traveling about 60 mph (in a 45 mph speed zone), and a witness reported that he observed the Dodge Challenger weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed, just prior to the collision.
The report stated that the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado and his 60 year-old female passenger, also of Sebasco Estates, Maine, were both transported by emergency medical services to HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson, Florida, and due to the condition of the driver, no citations had been issued at the time the crash report was completed.
