Homosassa, Florida - A 64 year-old man from Hernando, FL was injured in a two vehicle traffic crash that occurred at 8:45 am, Dec. 15, on U.S. Highway 19 (S. Suncoast Blvd.) at S. Stonebrook Dr. in Homosassa, as the result of a stop sign violation.
According to a crash report by the Florida Highway Patrol, the Hernando man was driving a 2020 Toyota Camry, traveling west on S. Stonebrook Dr., approaching a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. Highway 19, but failed to stop for the stop sign, and entered into the intersection, in the direct path of a 2000 Peterbilt tractor/trailer, driven by a 35 man from Homosassa, that was traveling north, in the outside lane, of US Highway 19, which resulted in the front of the truck striking the left side of the Toyota.
The impact caused the Toyota to rotate counter-clockwise, in a northeasterly direction, and leave the roadway to the right, onto the east grassy shoulder, where it overturned onto its right side and came to rest on its roof, facing southwest, approximately 200 feet north of the intersection. After the impact, the truck traveled approximately 2,000 feet before coming to a controlled stop in the inside, northbound lane of US Highway 19, disabled.
The driver of the Toyota was transported by emergency meical services to AirLife 4 for transport to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson, Florida
Three witnesses in the same vehicle, traveling in the inside northbound lane of US Highway 19, stated that the driver of the Toyota ran the stop sign which resulted in the collision. The driver of the Toyota was issued a traffic citation for the stop sign violation.
