Spring Hill crash, car into rear of horse-drawn carriage, kills horse and seriously injures its two passengers

Spring Hill, Florida - Two people were seriously injured and a horse was killed as the result of a collision in Spring Hill, Florida, at 9:20 pm, on Wednesday, March 17, between a 2010 Ford Focus sedan and a horse-drawn carriage.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the horse-drawn carriage was operated by a 26 year-old man from Spring Hill, who carried a passenger, a 39 year-old man, also of Spring Hill. The carriage was traveling west in the westbound lane of Bowman Road, approaching Milestone Drive. A 2010 Ford Focus, driven by a 19 year-old woman from Brooksville, FL, traveling west on Bowman Road behind the carriage, overtook the carriage, which had no tail lights. As a result, the vehicle collided into the rear of the carriage, which was propelled to final rest along the north shoulder of the roadway. 

The horse suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash. The two occupants of the carriage were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the sedan was not injured and was wearing a seabelt, according to the press release. 

The operator of the horse-drawn carriage was issued a citation for having no tail lights.

The names of those involved in the crash were not identified in the press release due to Marsy's Law, Florida's victim protection statute.
