Dr. Peggy MacDonald to speak: Florida’s Female Pioneers, August 6
Coffee and Conversation Speakers Series, Dr. Peggy MacDonald: Florida’s Female Pioneers, Thursday, August 6, 2020
Dr. Peggy MacDonald's program, Florida’s Female Pioneers, in the Citrus County Historical Society's, Coffee and Conversation Speakers Series, originally scheduled for May 6, but postponed due to Covid-19 closures, has been rescheduled for August 6, at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, located at 1 Courthoue Square, off Main St., in downtown Inverness, Florida.
Dr. MacDonald will be examining some of the women who have shaped Florida, including Dr. Esther Hill Hawks, a physician who ran the first racially integrated free school in Florida and Harriet Beecher Stowe, famous for writing Uncle Tom’s Cabin and also kick-started Florida’s tourism industry with her 1873 book, Palmetto Leaves.
Another trendsetter was May Mann Jennings, a Citrus County resident and daughter of Senator Austin Mann, Citrus County’s first Senator after being created from Hernando County in 1887. Ms. Jennings was a suffragist and conservationist who helped establish Royal Palm State Park, which forms the nucleus of Everglades National Park.
The program is open to public, but on a first come, first served basis due to space restriction related to Covid-19. For details regarding registering for this event or other information, please call (352) 341-6428, or visit citruscountyhistoricalsociety.org.
